Shame

/SHAYM/

Summary

The painful emotion of guilt, disgrace, or humiliation experienced when one's sin or failure is exposed, which Scripture uses both as a consequence of sin and as a warning against unfaithfulness.

Origin and Nature

Shame first appears after the Fall when Adam and Eve, having disobeyed God, recognized their nakedness and hid themselves in fear. Before sin entered, they were naked and 'not ashamed,' but sin brought an awareness of guilt and unworthiness before God that manifested as shame.

Jesus and Shame

Jesus warned that He would be ashamed of those who are ashamed of Him and His words in this adulterous generation. When He comes in glory, He will not acknowledge those who refused to acknowledge Him. Conversely, those who confess Him before men, He will confess before His Father in heaven.

Key verses:Mark 8:38Luke 9:26Matthew 10:32-33

Shamelessness

Scripture also condemns the absence of appropriate shame. When the Israelites worshiped the golden calf, Moses found them 'naked' (exposed, out of control), for Aaron had 'let them loose to their shame.' The unjust 'know no shame,' and false prophets are described as having 'no shame at all; they do not even know how to blush.'
