Chastisement

/CHAS-tiz-ment/

Summary

Corrective discipline administered by God to His children, distinct from punishment for the wicked, designed to produce righteousness and restore fellowship.

Divine Purpose

God's chastisement of His people is an expression of His love and fatherly care. Scripture declares that whom the Lord loves He chastens, and scourges every son He receives. Though grievous at the time, it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those exercised by it.

Key verses:Job 5:17Proverbs 3:11-12Hebrews 12:5-11

Response to Chastening

Believers are exhorted not to despise the Lord's chastening nor faint under it, but to endure it as coming from a loving Father. David's confession after his sin with Bathsheba exemplifies proper response—accepting God's discipline while trusting in His mercy.
