Casting Lots
/KAS-ting LOTS/
Summary
A method of determining divine will or making decisions by chance, used throughout Scripture for selecting the scapegoat, dividing land, and choosing Matthias as an apostle.
☩Old Testament Usage
Lots were cast to determine God's will in various matters: selecting the scapegoat on the Day of Atonement, dividing the land of Canaan among the tribes, detecting Achan's guilt, and choosing Saul as king. The proverb states that the lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the Lord.
