Zereda

צְרֵדָה/ZER-eh-dah/

Fortress or the cool place

Summary

A town in Mount Ephraim, the birthplace of Jeroboam the son of Nebat who became the first king of the northern kingdom of Israel.

Identification

Zereda was located somewhere in the hill country of Ephraim and was the native place of Jeroboam, whom God raised up to divide the kingdom after Solomon's death. According to the Septuagint additions to 1 Kings 12, Jeroboam fortified the town for Solomon. Its location on strong ground suggests it may have been a fortress or defensive position.
