Nebat

/NEE-bat/

Summary

Nebat was the father of Jeroboam I, the first king of the northern kingdom of Israel.

Identity

Nebat was an Ephraimite of Zereda whose son Jeroboam became the first king of the breakaway northern kingdom of Israel. He appears to have died before his son came to prominence. Jeroboam is consistently identified as 'the son of Nebat' throughout Kings and Chronicles, particularly in the recurring phrase describing his idolatrous sins.
