En Shemesh

עֵין שֶׁמֶשׁ/en-SHEH-mesh/

Fountain of the sun

Summary

A spring on the boundary between Judah and Benjamin, east of Jerusalem on the road to Jericho.

Location

En-shemesh ('fountain of the sun') was a spring on the northern boundary of Judah and the southern boundary of Benjamin, between the ascent of Adummim and the spring of En-rogel. It was therefore east of Jerusalem and of the Mount of Olives, probably on the road to Jericho. It is commonly identified with Ain Haud or Ain Chot, 'the Well of the Apostles,' about a mile below Bethany. The name is apt because the sun's rays shine on this spring throughout the entire day.
