Sherezer

/SHEH-ree-zer/

Summary

A messenger sent by the returned Jewish exiles to Jerusalem to inquire whether they should continue observing the fasts commemorating the destruction of the temple, also spelled Sharezer.

The Inquiry

Sherezer was sent along with Regem-melech by the Jewish community to 'the house of God' (the congregation of priests ministering at the altar in Jerusalem) in the fourth year of King Darius. Their mission was to ask whether the Jews should continue observing the fast on the fifth month, which commemorated the burning of the temple by Nebuchadnezzar. God's response through the prophet Zechariah was pointed: their fasting had been self-directed, not truly for the Lord, and He called them instead to practice justice and mercy.
