“Yahweh Has Judged”
Summary
A name borne by numerous Israelites including a son of David, a prince who opposed Jeremiah, and several ancestral heads of families.
☩Son of David
Shephatiah was the fifth son of David, born to his wife Abital during his reign in Hebron. He was among those sons born before David became king over all Israel.
☩Other Notable Bearers
A Benjamite warrior named Shephatiah joined David at Ziklag during his flight from Saul. Another Shephatiah was prince of the Simeonites during David's reign. One of Jehoshaphat's sons bore this name and was given great gifts by his father.
☩Opponent of Jeremiah
During the final days of Jerusalem, a Shephatiah son of Mattan was among the princes who urged King Zedekiah to put Jeremiah to death for prophesying the city's fall, claiming he was weakening the hands of the soldiers. They cast Jeremiah into a muddy cistern to die.
☩Returned Exiles
Two families bearing this name returned from Babylonian exile: one with 372 members under Zerubbabel and later 80 more with Ezra; another was among 'Solomon's servants' whose descendants returned.
