Shear Jashub

שְׁאָר יָשׁוּב/SHEE-ar JAY-shub/

A Remnant Shall Return

Summary

The elder son of the prophet Isaiah, whose symbolic name meaning 'a remnant shall return' served as a prophetic sign to Israel.

Prophetic Significance

Shear-jashub accompanied his father Isaiah when the prophet went to deliver a message to King Ahaz of Judah. Isaiah was commanded by God to take his son and meet Ahaz at the upper pool's aqueduct during the Syro-Ephraimite crisis, when the kings of Syria and Israel were threatening Jerusalem. The child's name was itself a prophecy—though judgment was coming, a faithful remnant would return.

Key verses:Isaiah 7:3

Name Meaning

The name Shear-jashub literally means 'a remnant shall return.' Isaiah's children served as 'signs and portents in Israel from the LORD of hosts' (Isaiah 8:18), their very names conveying prophetic messages. This son's name assured the people that while many would be taken away in judgment, a remnant would survive and return to the land in peace.
