Obed Edom

עֹבֵד אֱדוֹם/OH-bed-EE-dom/

Servant of Edom

Summary

Obed-edom was the Gittite in whose house the ark of the covenant remained for three months, bringing great blessing to his household.

The Ark's Sojourn

When David first attempted to bring the ark to Jerusalem, Uzzah was struck dead for touching it, causing David to fear bringing the ark into the city. Instead, the ark was placed in the house of Obed-edom the Gittite, where it remained for three months. During this time, the Lord blessed Obed-edom and his entire household abundantly. When David heard of this blessing, he was encouraged to complete the ark's journey to Jerusalem with proper reverence.

Levitical Service

A Levite named Obed-edom (possibly the same person) later served as a gatekeeper and musician in the tabernacle. He was among the Levites appointed by David to minister before the ark with music and thanksgiving. His descendants continued in this service, with several sons serving as gatekeepers in the temple. The name Obed-edom means "servant of Edom," though why this Levite bore such a name is uncertain.
