Jekuthiel

יְקוּתִיאֵל/jeh-KOO-thee-el/

Reverence of God or trust in God

Summary

A man of Judah, son of Mered and Jehudijah, and founder of the town Zanoah.

Identity

Jekuthiel was one of the sons of Mered by his Jewish wife Jehudijah (as opposed to Bithiah, Pharaoh's daughter). He is called the 'father of Zanoah,' meaning he founded or was the ancestral head of this Judean town. The Targum interprets his name allegorically as referring to Moses, stating that Jekuthiel ('trust in God') was so named 'because in his days the Israelites trusted in the God of heaven for forty years in the wilderness.' In Jewish tradition, a remarkable prayer used by Spanish and Portuguese Jews invokes Elijah as having 'tidings of peace delivered to him by the hand of Jekuthiel.'
