Jehudijah

יְהֻדִיָּה/jeh-hoo-DY-juh/

The Jewess

Summary

A woman of Judah, wife of Mered and mother of several founders of cities, distinguished from Mered's Egyptian wife Bithiah.

Identity

Jehudijah ('the Jewess') appears in the genealogies of Judah as the second wife of Mered, distinguished from his first wife Bithiah, who was a daughter of Pharaoh. She was the mother of Jered (founder of Gedor), Heber (founder of Socho), and Jekuthiel (founder of Zanoah). The name is actually a designation ('the Jewess') rather than a proper name, and it may be identical with Hodiah mentioned in the following verse. The complex structure of 1 Chronicles 4:17-19 has created some interpretive difficulties, with scholars offering various arrangements of the text.
