Jehozabad

יְהוֹזָבָד/jeh-HOZ-uh-bad/

Jehovah has bestowed, or Jehovah has given

Summary

A Hebrew name meaning 'Jehovah has bestowed' or 'Jehovah has given,' borne by three men in the Old Testament: a Levitical doorkeeper, a Benjamite military commander, and one of the assassins of King Joash of Judah.

Name and Etymology

The Hebrew name יְהוֹזָבָד (Yehozabad) means 'Jehovah has bestowed' or 'Jehovah has given.' It is closely related to the name Jozabad, which is simply a contracted form with the same meaning. The Septuagint renders it variously as Ἰωζαβάδ (Iozabad) or Ἰωζαβέδ (Iozabed).

Persons Bearing This Name

Three men bear this name in Scripture: (1) The second son of Obed-edom, the Levitical gatekeeper, who served as a doorkeeper at the south gate of the Temple and the storehouse during David's reign (1 Chronicles 26:4, 15). (2) A Benjamite, one of King Jehoshaphat's military commanders, who led 180,000 armed men (2 Chronicles 17:18). (3) The son of Shomer (or Shimrith, a Moabitess), who with Jozachar (or Zabad) conspired against and assassinated King Joash of Judah at Millo (2 Kings 12:21; 2 Chronicles 24:26). This assassination came after Joash had turned to idolatry and murdered Zechariah the priest, son of Jehoiada.
