Jedidiah

יְדִידְיָה/jed-ih-DY-uh/

Beloved of Jehovah, or darling of the Lord

Summary

The name given by God through Nathan the prophet to Solomon at his birth, signifying 'beloved of the Lord.'

Divine Naming

Jedidiah was the name conferred by God through Nathan the prophet upon Solomon at his birth (2 Samuel 12:25). The name, meaning 'beloved of the Lord,' was given as a pledge of David's restoration to God's favor after his sin with Bathsheba. This special name, combining David's own name (which means 'beloved') with Jehovah's name, implied the union of the earthly and heavenly kingdoms. David had first named his son Solomon ('man of peace') because he regarded the birth as a token of his restored peace with God.
