Jedaiah

יְדַעְיָה/jeh-DAY-yuh/

Knowing Jehovah or Jehovah knows

Summary

A name borne by several men in the Old Testament, most notably the head of the second course of priests under David and a priest who returned from Babylonian exile.

Priestly Jedaiah

The most prominent Jedaiah was the head of the second course of priests as organized by David. His descendants formed a major priestly family: 973 of his relatives returned from Babylon with Zerubbabel, belonging to the house of Jeshua. Though Joiarib's course was technically first, Jedaiah's family is often named first in post-exilic records because their head Jeshua was high priest under Zerubbabel. A Jedaiah also appears among those whom Zechariah was commanded to meet, bringing gold and silver from Babylon for the symbolic crowns placed in the Temple.

Other Men Named Jedaiah

A different Jedaiah was a Simeonite, son of Shimri and ancestor of Ziza, one of the chiefs who migrated to the valley of Gedor. Another Jedaiah, son of Harumaph, helped repair the wall of Jerusalem under Nehemiah. Several other priests named Jedaiah are mentioned among those who returned from exile and served in Jerusalem.
