Joiarib is the name of several men: (1) A teacher or 'man of understanding' whom Ezra sent to fetch Levites for service in the house of God (Ezra 8:16). (2) A descendant of Judah through Zechariah who lived in Jerusalem after the exile (Nehemiah 11:5). (3) A priest who is the same as Jehoiarib, founder of one of the priestly courses, mentioned in Nehemiah 11:10; 12:6, 19. The name means 'Yahweh pleads' or 'whom Jehovah defends.'
