Summary

The name of several men in the Old Testament, most notably a prophet who recorded the reigns of Solomon, Rehoboam, and Abijah.

Iddo the Prophet

A seer and prophet of Judah who wrote concerning the reigns of Solomon, Rehoboam, and Abijah. His 'visions against Jeroboam the son of Nebat' contained some notices of Solomon's life. He wrote of Rehoboam in a book 'concerning genealogies' and recorded the acts, ways, and sayings of Abijah in his 'story' or commentary (midrash). Some identify him with the unnamed prophet who denounced Jeroboam's altar at Bethel.

Grandfather of Zechariah

A priest who was the grandfather of the prophet Zechariah. He was one of the chief priests who returned from Babylon with Zerubbabel. Through his grandson Zechariah, his priestly line continued to serve the restored community.

Other Persons Named Iddo

Several other men bore this name: the father of Ahinadab, Solomon's commissary in Mahanaim; a Levite descendant of Gershom; David's viceroy of the half tribe of Manasseh east of Jordan; and the chief of those Jews established at Casiphia who provided Ezra with Levites and Nethinim for the return to Jerusalem.
