Hashabiah

חֲשַׁבְיָה/hash-uh-BYE-uh/

Regarded by Jehovah or Jehovah has considered

Summary

Hashabiah, meaning "regarded by Jehovah," was a common name among Levites, borne by at least nine men who served in musical, administrative, and priestly roles from David's time through the post-exilic period.

Levites in David's Time

Several Hashabiahs served during David's reign: (1) A son of Amaziah in the ancestry of the Temple musicians; (2) A son of Jeduthun who headed the twelfth course of Levitical singers; and (3) A son of Kemuel of Hebron who oversaw the sacred revenues west of the Jordan. These positions indicate the name was favored among families dedicated to Temple service.

Post-Exilic Hashabiahs

After the exile, men named Hashabiah appear prominently: one was a chief Levite who contributed offerings for Josiah's great Passover; others returned with Ezra, including one entrusted with transporting the Temple treasures from Babylon. A Hashabiah helped repair Jerusalem's walls and sealed Nehemiah's covenant. The frequency of this name among Levites reflects their families' devotion to divine service across generations.
