Jailer(jailor)

Summary

A prison guard; most notably the Philippian jailer who was converted when an earthquake opened the prison doors yet Paul and Silas remained in custody.

The Philippian Jailer

The most notable jailer in Scripture is the Philippian jailer of Acts 16:27-34. He had been charged to keep Paul and Silas securely after their arrest for casting out a demon. When an earthquake opened the prison doors and loosed the prisoners' chains at midnight, the jailer drew his sword to kill himself, fearing the prisoners had escaped. Paul called out to stop him, and the jailer, trembling, asked 'What must I do to be saved?' Paul answered, 'Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.' The jailer washed their wounds, was baptized with his family, and rejoiced believing in God.
