Bones

/BOHNZ/

Summary

The skeletal framework of the body, used figuratively for one's essential being, and significant in prophecy and messianic fulfillment.

Figurative Usage

Bones represent the innermost being. Breaking bones expresses overwhelming sorrow that prostrates body and mind. When one has a broken and contrite heart, 'the bones which God has broken rejoice.' Good news is said to be health to the bones.

Key verses:Psalm 51:8Isaiah 38:13Proverbs 3:8Proverbs 16:24

Vision of Dry Bones

Ezekiel's vision of the valley of dry bones symbolizes Israel's restoration. The scattered bones represent the nation in exile, seemingly beyond hope. God's Spirit brings them together and gives them life, promising national resurrection.

Key verses:Ezekiel 37:1-14

Messianic Fulfillment

The prophecy 'He keeps all his bones; not one of them is broken' was fulfilled in Christ's crucifixion. Unlike the criminals beside Him, Jesus's legs were not broken, fulfilling both this psalm and the requirements for the Passover lamb.

Key verses:Psalm 34:20John 19:33-36Exodus 12:46
