Stars

/STARZ/

Summary

The celestial lights created by God on the fourth day, used in Scripture as symbols of multitude, glory, and spiritual beings.

Created by God

God created the stars on the fourth day and determines their number, calling them each by name. They differ in splendor: 'one star differeth from another star in glory.' The constellations include Orion, the Pleiades, and the Serpent, all mentioned as evidence of divine handiwork.

Worship Forbidden

God forbade worship of the sun, moon, and stars as 'the host of heaven.' Nevertheless, Israel fell into this idolatry, worshiping Chiun and Remphan, for which God threatened exile. The Magi's star at Christ's birth was not astrological worship but divine providence—a unique sign pointing to the Messiah.

Symbolic Uses

The 'morning star' represents Christ: 'I will give him the morning star' and 'I am the bright and morning star.' Darkening of stars signifies divine judgment in apocalyptic prophecy. Angels are sometimes called 'stars' as beings of light, and the twelve stars on the woman's crown in Revelation represent the twelve tribes.
