Tutor
παιδαγωγός/TOO-ter/
“Child-leader, guardian”
Summary
A tutor or guardian in biblical times supervised minors until they came of age; Paul used this concept to describe the law's role before Christ.
☩The Law as Tutor
Paul declared that the law was our 'schoolmaster' (paidagogos) to bring us to Christ. The paidagogos was not a teacher but a guardian-slave who supervised a child, escorting him to school and maintaining discipline until he reached maturity. Similarly, the law supervised Israel, revealing sin and the need for a Savior, until faith in Christ came and believers were no longer under its guardianship.
