Traitor

/TRAY-ter/

Summary

A traitor is one who betrays trust, with Judas Iscariot being the archetypal biblical traitor who betrayed Jesus for thirty pieces of silver.

Judas Iscariot

Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve apostles, betrayed Jesus to the chief priests for thirty pieces of silver. He identified Jesus with a kiss in the garden of Gethsemane. After seeing Jesus condemned, Judas was seized with remorse, returned the money, and hanged himself. His treachery fulfilled Scripture and resulted in his being replaced by Matthias.

Warning Against Treachery

Paul warned Timothy that in the last days people would be 'traitors, heady, high-minded.' Jesus called Judas 'the son of perdition' and declared it would have been better for him if he had never been born. The betrayal of trust, whether against God, country, or individuals, is consistently condemned throughout Scripture.
