Salutations
Summary
Formal greetings in biblical culture, involving words and gestures such as kissing, bowing, and embracing.
☩Forms of Greeting
Eastern salutations included kissing, bowing, and embracing. Joab took Amasa by the beard to kiss him before treacherously slaying him. Judas betrayed Jesus with a kiss. Bowing showed respect: Abraham bowed to the three visitors at Mamre, and Lot to the angels at Sodom.
☩Greetings on the Road
Common greetings included 'Peace be with you' and 'The Lord be with you.' Jesus warned against the Pharisees who loved greetings in marketplaces. He also instructed the seventy to 'salute no man by the way'—not forbidding courtesy, but avoiding time-consuming ceremonial exchanges that would delay their urgent mission.
☩Apostolic Greetings
Paul's letters typically open with 'Grace and peace' and close with the 'holy kiss' or 'kiss of love.' The apostolic greeting combined Jewish 'peace' (shalom) with Greek 'grace' (charis), expressing the gospel's provision. Paul sometimes dictated letters but added greetings in his own hand as authentication.
