Responsibility(accountability)

/ree-spon-si-BIL-i-tee/

Summary

Responsibility in Scripture establishes that every person will give account to God for their own actions, beliefs, and use of entrusted gifts and opportunities.

Individual Accountability

Ezekiel emphasized individual responsibility against the proverb 'The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge.' Each soul bears responsibility for its own sin: 'The soul that sinneth, it shall die.' Paul confirms that 'every one of us shall give account of himself to God.'

Key verses:Ezekiel 18:2-4Ezekiel 18:20Romans 14:12

Stewardship Responsibility

Jesus' parables teach that those entrusted with resources must give account for their use. The parable of the talents shows that responsibility corresponds to ability: 'unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required.' Faithful stewards receive commendation and greater responsibility; unfaithful ones face judgment.

Key verses:Matthew 25:14-30Luke 12:48Luke 16:1-12

Responsibility for Others

While each bears responsibility for their own sin, Scripture also describes responsibility toward others. The watchman who fails to warn the wicked bears blood-guilt. Teachers face stricter judgment because of their influence. Leaders are accountable for those in their care.

Key verses:Ezekiel 3:17-21James 3:1Hebrews 13:17
