Gentleness

/JEN-tuhl-ness/

Summary

A Christian virtue characterized by kindness, considerateness, and tenderness in dealing with others, exemplified supremely in the character of Christ.

Biblical Terms

Several Hebrew and Greek words convey the concept of gentleness. In the Old Testament, the Hebrew term suggests 'condescension' or 'humility,' as when David attributed his greatness to God's gentleness. In the New Testament, the Greek epieikeia denotes 'fairness' or 'considerateness'—the quality of looking humanely and reasonably at the facts of a situation. Another term, chrestotes, emphasizes 'kindness' and 'usefulness,' carrying the idea of active benevolence.

The Gentleness of Christ

Paul appealed to 'the meekness and gentleness of Christ' as qualities so characteristic of Jesus that they required no specific illustration. Christ's gentleness is seen in His reception of little children, His tender touch upon the leper, His compassion for the sorrowing, and His gracious words to His perplexed disciples. This was not weakness but the expression of divine dignity—the gentleness of one who had twelve legions of angels at His disposal yet chose the way of the suffering servant.

A Christian Virtue

Gentleness is listed among the fruit of the Spirit and is commanded of all believers. It stands opposed to harshness, severity, pride, and oppression. True gentleness is not passive tameness or unlimited compliance, but requires a firm mind and fixed principle. It makes us unwilling to give pain to others and studies to alleviate the burdens of common humanity. Servants of the Lord must be gentle, patient, and meek in instructing those who oppose themselves.
