Appetite

/AP-e-tite/

Summary

Natural physical desires, especially for food, which Scripture addresses in terms of moderation and spiritual priority.

Physical and Spiritual

Scripture recognizes legitimate physical appetites while warning against excess. Gluttony is condemned, and self-control is commended. Jesus contrasted physical food with spiritual nourishment—'Man shall not live by bread alone.' Solomon observed that appetite can never be fully satisfied apart from God, who alone satisfies the hungry soul.
