Location

Alush was the eleventh station where the Israelites rested on their journey to Mount Sinai, situated between Dophkah and Rephidim. The exact location is uncertain, though it was likely on the shore of the Red Sea. Jewish tradition places it twelve miles from Dophkah and eight miles from Rephidim. The Targum of Jonathan describes it as "a strong fort."

According to Jewish tradition based on an interpretation of Exodus 16:30, this was the place where the Sabbath was first instituted and the first Sabbath was kept by the Israelites in the wilderness.
