Ozias

/oh-ZY-us/

Summary

Ozias is the Greek form of the Hebrew name Uzziah, appearing in Matthew's genealogy of Jesus Christ.

In Christ's Genealogy

Ozias appears in Matthew's genealogy as an ancestor of Jesus, listed as the father of Joatham (Jotham). This is the Greek rendering of Uzziah (also called Azariah), the king of Judah who reigned for fifty-two years in Jerusalem. Uzziah began his reign well and prospered as long as he sought the Lord, but became proud and was struck with leprosy when he presumed to burn incense in the temple. Despite his tragic ending, Uzziah remained in the messianic line through which Christ would come.
