Mizraim

מִצְרַיִם

Two Straits, Egypt

Summary

The Hebrew name for Egypt and the son of Ham who was ancestor of the Egyptians.

Son of Ham

'The sons of Ham; Cush, and Mizraim, and Phut, and Canaan' (Genesis 10:6). Mizraim fathered peoples who settled in northern Africa: 'Mizraim begat Ludim, and Anamim, and Lehabim, and Naphtuhim, and Pathrusim, and Casluhim... and Caphtorim' (Genesis 10:13-14).

Name for Egypt

Throughout the Hebrew Bible, Mizraim is the standard word for Egypt. The dual form of the name may reflect Upper and Lower Egypt's two divisions. Egypt's identity as 'land of Ham' (Psalm 105:23, 27; 106:22) traces back to this Hamitic descent.
