Jeremoth

יְרֵמוֹת/JER-eh-moth/

Heights

Summary

A Hebrew name meaning 'heights,' borne by several men in the Old Testament including Levites, Benjamites, and Israelites who divorced their foreign wives after the exile; essentially equivalent to the name Jerimoth.

Levites Named Jeremoth

A Levite, the last named of the three sons of Mushi, grandson of Levi, appears as Jeremoth in 1 Chronicles 23:23 but as Jerimoth in 1 Chronicles 24:30. Another Levite was the head of the fifteenth division of Temple musicians, called Jeremoth in 1 Chronicles 25:22 and probably the same as Jerimoth in 1 Chronicles 25:4. A Levite of the sons of Elizaphan assisted in cleansing the Temple during Hezekiah's reign (2 Chronicles 29:13).

Other Bearers of This Name

A Benjamite named Jeremoth was one of the sons of Beriah (1 Chronicles 8:14). Two Israelites named Jeremoth are listed among those who divorced their foreign wives after the exile: one of the sons of Elam (Ezra 10:26) and one of the sons of Zattu (Ezra 10:27). In Ezra 10:29, the marginal reading 'and Ramoth' appears to be another form of this name.
