Summary

A Kohathite Levite who was chief of his family at the time of the Exodus and who was directed to remove the bodies of Nadab and Abihu; also the name of a prince of Zebulun.

Kohathite Chief

Elizaphan was the second son of Uzziel, grandson of Kohath, and chief of the Kohathite Levites at the time of the Exodus. When Aaron's sons Nadab and Abihu were struck dead for offering unauthorized fire before the Lord, Moses directed Elizaphan and his elder brother Mishael to carry their corpses outside the camp. In those passages his name is contracted to Elzaphan. His family continued to be prominent: they were represented in David's time when the ark was brought to Jerusalem, and participated in Hezekiah's revival.
