Hoshaiah
הוֹשַׁעְיָה
“Whom Jehovah aids”
Summary
A name borne by two men: a leader in the dedication of Jerusalem's walls, and the father of Jezaniah (or Azariah) who opposed Jeremiah.
☩Leader at the Dedication
Hoshaiah was a leader among the princes of Judah who participated in the dedication of Jerusalem's rebuilt walls under Nehemiah (Nehemiah 12:32). He led one of the two processions of thanksgiving that marched on the walls.
☩Father of Azariah
Another Hoshaiah was father of Jezaniah (or Azariah), one of the 'proud men' who rejected Jeremiah's counsel after Jerusalem's fall (Jeremiah 42:1; 43:2). Despite asking Jeremiah to inquire of God, they accused him of lying when his message contradicted their plans and fled to Egypt anyway.
