Summary

Hezron refers to two men in Scripture: a son of Reuben and a son of Perez (grandson of Judah), the latter being an ancestor of both David and Jesus Christ.

Hezron, Son of Reuben

Hezron was one of the sons of Reuben, Jacob's firstborn, who went down to Egypt with Jacob's household. His descendants were called Hezronites and formed one of the families of the tribe of Reuben. He is listed among those who entered Egypt and again in the census of Numbers.

Hezron, Son of Perez

Hezron was the eldest of two sons of Perez and grandson of Judah through Tamar. His descendants were also called Hezronites and became a prominent family in Judah. Through his son Ram (Aram), Hezron became an ancestor of David and of Jesus Christ. The genealogy in 1 Chronicles 2 details Hezron's descendants through his sons Jerahmeel, Ram, and Chelubai (Caleb). He is called Esrom in the New Testament genealogies.

Hezron as a Place

Hezron also appears as a place name on the southern boundary of Judah, west of Kadesh-Barnea, associated with Kerioth and called Hazor in Joshua 15:25. The boundary description connects it with Adar as 'Kerioth-hezron' or 'Hazor.'
