Chileab

כִּלְאָב/KIL-ee-ab/

Restraint of father, or like his father

Summary

The second son of King David by Abigail, also called Daniel in 1 Chronicles.

Identity

Chileab was the second son of King David, born to him at Hebron by Abigail, the widow of Nabal the Carmelite. In the parallel passage in 1 Chronicles 3:1, he is called by the equivalent name Daniel. The meaning of Daniel ('God is my judge') may point to its having been given to commemorate God's judgment upon Nabal. Some scholars believe he bore both names, while others suggest the text of Samuel may be corrupt. Nothing further is recorded of Chileab, and he apparently died before David's succession crisis.
