Abishua

אֲבִישׁוּעַ/uh-BISH-oo-uh/

Father of welfare or salvation

Summary

A name meaning "father of welfare" or "father of salvation," borne by two men in the Old Testament: a high priest descended from Aaron and a Benjamite.

The High Priest

The more prominent Abishua was the son of Phinehas, grandson of Aaron, and father of Bukki, making him the fourth high priest of the Hebrews. According to Josephus, he was succeeded in the priesthood by Eli, with his descendants falling to the rank of private persons until Zadok. The Chronicon of Alexandria indicates he was nearly contemporary with the judge Ehud.
