Abiah
אֲבִיָּה/uh-BY-uh/
“Yahweh is my father”
Summary
An alternate spelling of Abijah, most notably used for Samuel's corrupt son whose misconduct contributed to Israel's demand for a king.
☩Samuel's Son
Abiah was the second son of the prophet Samuel, along with his brother Joel. When Samuel grew old, he appointed his sons as judges in Israel at Beersheba. However, they did not walk in their father's ways but turned aside after dishonest gain, accepted bribes, and perverted justice. Their corrupt administration became one of the primary reasons the elders of Israel gave when they demanded that Samuel appoint a king to rule over them 'like all the nations.'
