Garner

/GAHR-ner/

Summary

A storehouse or granary for storing threshed grain, used metaphorically of the place where God gathers His people.

Definition

A garner (from a root meaning 'to gather') is a storehouse, especially for grain and fruits of the earth. The Hebrew words rendered 'garner' primarily mean 'treasure' or 'store-room.' In the New Testament, the Greek word is also translated 'barn.'

Key verses:Psalm 144:13Joel 1:17

Figurative Use

John the Baptist used the garner as a powerful image of final judgment: the wheat will be gathered into the garner while the chaff is burned with unquenchable fire. This represents God's separation of the righteous from the wicked at the end of the age.
