Liars

/LY-erz/

Summary

Those who speak falsehood; lying is condemned throughout Scripture as contrary to God's nature.

Source of Lying

Jesus identified Satan as 'a liar, and the father of it' (John 8:44). Lying entered human experience through the serpent's deception in Eden (Genesis 3:4). All lying ultimately derives from this source and contradicts the nature of God, who 'cannot lie' (Titus 1:2; Hebrews 6:18). The first recorded church discipline involved Ananias and Sapphira's lie to the Holy Spirit (Acts 5:1-11).

Condemnation of Liars

Scripture consistently condemns lying. The ninth commandment prohibits bearing false witness (Exodus 20:16). Proverbs declares 'lying lips are abomination to the LORD' (Proverbs 12:22). Revelation includes 'all liars' among those whose 'part shall be in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone' (Revelation 21:8) and excludes from the heavenly city 'whosoever loveth and maketh a lie' (Revelation 22:15).
