Unfruitfulness

Summary

The failure to produce spiritual fruit, depicted in Scripture through images of barren trees and unproductive land, representing lives that fail to manifest the results of genuine faith.

Biblical Imagery

Unfruitfulness is presented through powerful images: the cursed fig tree that bore no fruit, the vineyard that produced only wild grapes, seeds choked by thorns and cares of the world. Jesus warned that every tree not producing good fruit would be cut down and thrown into the fire. The branch that does not abide in Christ is cast forth and withers.

Spiritual Significance

Barrenness in Israel was considered a family's greatest misfortune, while fruitfulness was God's special blessing. Metaphorically, Israel in adversity was barren but in restoration would rejoice in many children. Peter warns that those lacking spiritual virtues are 'idle' (argos)—spiritually unfruitful and ineffective in their knowledge of Christ.
