Uncircumcision

Summary

The state of not being circumcised, used in Scripture both literally of Gentiles who had not received this covenant sign, and figuratively of hearts hardened against God.

Literal Meaning

Uncircumcision referred to the physical state of Gentiles who had not received the covenant sign given to Abraham. In Jewish usage, 'the uncircumcision' became a term for Gentile peoples as a whole, distinguishing them from Israel who bore the mark of the covenant. Paul reminds the Ephesian Gentiles that they were once called 'Uncircumcision' by the Jews who prided themselves on their circumcision.

Figurative Usage

Scripture also speaks of uncircumcision metaphorically. The prophets condemned 'uncircumcised hearts'—hearts hardened and unresponsive to God. Moses warned that God would circumcise their hearts so they would love Him. Ezekiel spoke of those uncircumcised in heart and flesh being excluded from the sanctuary. Stephen accused the Jewish leaders of being 'uncircumcised in heart and ears.'
