Theocracy

/thee-AHK-ruh-see/

Summary

Theocracy refers to the form of government in which God is recognized as the supreme ruler, as Israel was governed during the period from Moses through the judges.

Israel's Theocratic Government

Israel was uniquely a theocratic nation—God Himself was their King. The law given through Moses was God's direct legislation. During the period of the judges, God raised up deliverers as needed. When Israel demanded a king 'like all the nations,' Samuel warned that they were rejecting God as their king. Even under the monarchy, kings were expected to rule under God's law.
