Purity

/PYOOR-ih-tee/

Summary

Purity in Scripture encompasses ceremonial cleanness, moral uprightness, and spiritual holiness before God.

Ceremonial Purity

The Mosaic law established elaborate regulations for ceremonial purity involving clean and unclean animals, bodily discharges, contact with the dead, and various purification rites. These external regulations pointed to deeper spiritual realities about approaching a holy God and were fulfilled in Christ.

Moral and Spiritual Purity

Beyond external observance, God requires inward purity. The pure in heart will see God. Believers are to pursue purity in thought, speech, and conduct. Paul urges Timothy to keep himself pure. James defines pure religion as caring for orphans and widows while keeping oneself unstained by the world. Sexual purity is particularly emphasized.
