Panic

/PAN-ik/

Summary

Panic in Scripture often describes sudden terror sent by God upon enemies of Israel, causing armies to turn upon themselves in confusion.

Divine Terror

Scripture records numerous instances where God sent panic upon Israel's enemies. When Jacob's family departed from Shechem, 'the terror of God was upon the cities' so none pursued them. The Midianites turned their swords upon each other at Gideon's trumpet blast. The Philistines were thrown into confusion, and the Aramean army fled hearing the sound of a great army that was not there.

Covenant Promise and Warning

God promised that obedient Israel would see their enemies flee in panic, with one putting a thousand to flight. Conversely, disobedient Israel was warned that they themselves would flee when none pursued, panicking at the sound of a driven leaf.
