Concealing one's true feelings or motives under a false appearance; hypocrisy or pretense.

Biblical Examples

Joshua's covenant with the Gibeonites was made because they 'did work wilily'—dissembling by pretending to be from a distant land. Peter dissembled at Antioch by withdrawing from Gentiles, leading Barnabas and others astray. Paul withstood him publicly for this hypocrisy.

Warning Against Hypocrisy

Love must be 'without dissimulation'—without hypocrisy or pretense. James warns against the double-minded man. The wisdom from above is 'without hypocrisy.' God sees through all pretense and judges the heart.
