Summary
A form of corporal punishment prescribed by the Mosaic law and experienced by the apostles for their witness.

The Law prescribed beating as punishment for certain offenses, limiting it to forty stripes lest the offender be degraded beyond measure. In practice, only thirty-nine stripes were administered to avoid accidentally exceeding the limit.
