Sheep Gate

/SHEEP GAYT/

Summary

An ancient gate of Jerusalem near the northeast corner, rebuilt by Nehemiah and associated with the Pool of Bethesda in John's Gospel.

Location and Rebuilding

The Sheep Gate was one of the gates of Jerusalem, probably near the northeast corner of the city wall. Eliashib the high priest and his fellow priests rebuilt it, setting up its doors and sanctifying it as far as the Tower of the Hundred and the Tower of Hananel. The dedication procession also passed by this gate, confirming its importance in the city's layout.

New Testament Connection

Near the Sheep Gate was the pool called Bethesda with five porches, where Jesus healed the man who had been infirm for thirty-eight years. The gate's name suggests it was used for bringing sheep into the city, possibly for sacrifice at the nearby temple.
