Madmenah

מַדְמֵנָה/mad-MEE-nuh/

Dunghill

Summary

Madmenah was a Benjamite village north of Jerusalem whose inhabitants fled before the approach of the Assyrian army under Sennacherib.

In Isaiah's Prophecy

Madmenah appears in Isaiah's dramatic portrayal of the Assyrian advance on Jerusalem, where the prophet traces the invader's route through the villages north of the city. The verse reads: 'Madmenah is removed; the inhabitants of Gebim gather themselves to flee.' The name, like the similar Madmannah, means 'dunghill,' possibly indicating a place where refuse was deposited.
