Jiphtah

יִפְתָּח/JIF-tah/

He opens or whom God sets free

Summary

A city in the lowland territory of Judah, located in the shephelah region between the coastal plain and the Judean highlands.

Location

Jiphtah was a town in the maritime lowland or shephelah district of Judah, mentioned between Ashnah and Ashnah in Joshua 15:43. The name means 'whom God sets free' or 'it opens,' which may point to a site at the opening of the hills to the plain. The city belonged to the southern medial group of towns in Judah's inheritance, situated west of Hebron and east of Eleutheropolis. Some scholars have identified it with Batihah in the Gaza province, though the exact location remains uncertain. The site has not been conclusively identified in modern times.
