Hills

Summary

Elevated terrain that features prominently in biblical geography, history, and religious practice.

Significance

Palestine's hilly terrain shaped its history. Abraham built altars on hills (Genesis 12:8; 22:2). High places became sites of both legitimate and idolatrous worship (1 Kings 14:23). Important cities occupied hilltops for defense. Mount Zion became God's 'holy hill' (Psalm 2:6), and Jesus delivered His famous sermon on a mountainside (Matthew 5:1). Psalm 121 declares: 'I lift up my eyes to the hills—where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD.'
